Second Day - I SURVIVED 2 DAYS!

• What did you do today?


• Briefly describe your day's activities.
We woke up in the morning and we assembled at the function hall 12 for a briefing by the teachers and followed by breakfast. Then, we head out to our various schools. Ours was School of Material Science and Engineering. We took a long time to find the room that we were suppose to go to and we found it finally after an hour or so. At the location, we were taught the basics of Tensile Testing of Engineering Materials, Scanning Electron Microscope and Composite Material Processing. Following the talk by the assistant professer, we headed for our tea break. We reported back to our location for composite material processing. I found this part of the project really interesting. This is because we learnt the uses and benefits of creating composite materials. We poured a mixture of epoxy and hardener in the ration of 3:1 on the fibre sheets which hardend to become a really good composite materials. Next, we were left off to our lunch break. We finished our composite material processing very quickly so we had a long time for our break. After our lunch break, we went for our tensile testing. This was really fun. We found out how much a material could bend. Following that, we went for a small tea break and went to the electron microscope session. This was really interesting. I found myself really fascinated by the electron microscope by how it works and how helpful it is.

• What did you learn today?
I learnt a lot basically a lot about how materials are helpful in our everyday life.

• Describe any learning points from today's activities
A learning point is that every different material has its own properties which can be used in many different ways to help human survival
• How do you feel about today's activities?

• Describe how the project has affected your understanding of the discipline?
The project has helped me understand the discipline better.

• How may this discipline be applied elsewhere?
It my be applied in our everyday life to solve problems such as knowing how much  of certain material we are suppose to use to hold a weight without the material snapping.

First Day

• Pre Camp

• What sounds interesting about this project?
The main part of the project which sounds really interesting is the scanning through the electron microscope I find the electron microscope. This is because it is a main part of nano technology which I am really keen on.

• What do you think you can learn from this project?
I think I can learn a lot from this project. Mainly because there are 3 different parts in this project. All of them related but really spread apart. So this would increase my knowledge which would be a huge help to decide which path I am going to take in the later part of my life.

• Any immediate questions regarding the project?
At the moment, I do not have any questions regarding this project as I think I have not been fully exposed to this field of science yet. But once I start on this project, I am very sure I would have many questions.

• Plenary Sessions

I did not attend the first session as I had to attend the Singapore Maths Olympiad. However, I found the second plenary session about animation rather interesting. An interesting point I learnt about animation which I never knew about is that 3D animation is more cheaper and cost effective when compared to 2D films. In the next plenary session about nanotechnology, I learnt that nanotechnology is really helpful to cure many diseases however, many nano robots require motor which is really hard to make as it becomes too hot and would not be able to be fit inside a human body.
